Dodge pulled out all the stops for the launch of its new 2009 Ram pickup this morning, driving the truck out at the head of an honest-to-God herd of long-horn cattle.

The effect wasn’t as picturesque as had been promised when Dodge first discussed the “stampede” launch, as there was a lot more standing around looking cold on the part of the cattle than actual, stampeding. The occasional amorous gesture (re: mounting) on the part of the bulls was greatly appreciated by the journalists in attendance, if not Jim Press, who at one point was reduced to yelling, “Okay, look at the truck!” to the amused crowd.

As for the new Ram, Dodge seemed to be pitching the increased flexibility of the truck, noting that many more Americans are using pickups as primary and family vehicles these days. To this end, the new Ram will come equipped with more nooks and crannies than ever, including the vaunted RamBox storage system on the bed sides, and in-floor storage. (more…)

This was an interesting auto show to say the least. Clearly, “green” and fuel efficiency was the big message that most of the auto companies were trying to push. There are some great concepts and some great new powertrain technologies out there. But I can’t help but be a bit suspicious.

It’s clear that GM and the other auto makers are taking the “green” trend seriously. All the GM execs seemed as though they’d been through a training course on how to pitch their green message – desiring to be a leader in all of the advanced power train technologies.

It seems that Volvo will be debuting its new XC60 compact SUV at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show this March, following that with a North American first look at the New York Auto Show. Volvo more or less passed on NAIAS this year, saving its five-passenger BMW X3-fighter for a European launch instead. Initial reports had the XC60 being powered by a version of the 3.2-liter six that can currently be found in Volvo ’s S80, but new findings now claim that the powerplant could end up being a transversely mounted inline-5. Look for the XC60 to have available all-wheel-drive (as the “x” would suggest), but to be equipped with front-wheel-drive as standard. + Edmunds Inside Line: 2008 Geneva Show

Mazda Miatta

We seem to be drawn to not only the concept cars, but also the sportiest on the floor. The Mazda Miata still runs around $21,000 and looks pretty much the same. It still has that unique PRHT (Power Retractable Hard Top) that is hidden between the trunk and the back seat. Push a button and it pops up in about 12 seconds; no struggling needed. Another button push and it retracts again, at least we think it does. Either we broke it or too many folks had played with it too long. A pic of that after the jump.
